HFPRI is the institute specialized in forest products.
It always conducts the research from the standpoint of supporting wood industry. The characteristic of our institute is using full-scale machines to develop not only the useful products but also the useful methods for produce.

Timber Engineering Division

This division does work in the following areas:
development of synthetic technology for housing materials and exterior products, development of wooden structures that are stable and comfortable, wooden materials, decay resistance such as development of technology for improving durability, development of technology for fire improving resistance, improvement and development of gluing and surface treatment technology for wood, etc..

Wood Utilization Division

This division concentrates on development of high-level technology using charcoal products and biomass resources, development of technology for using outdoor applications using chemical treatments, development of technology for recycling resources from waste wood, and evaluation of wood qualities, etc..

Wood Processing Division

This division involves improvement of generic technology, rationalization of production processes, development of new technologies, such as those for sawmills, drying, wood processing, plywood, and boards, its purpose is to develop and promote more efficient manufacturing techniques on an industrial scale.

Mushroom Division

This division studies the culture of edible mushrooms that are suitable for the climate of Hokkaido such as shiitake, etc., and development of efficient cultivation technologies for them.
